Bao-Lu Hsu (Xu Baolu) is the Chinese mathematician who first achieved worldwide influence in the fields of probability theory and mathematical statistics. He has made outstanding contributions in statistical inference, multivariate statistical analysis, and probability theory. Along with Hua Luogeng and Shiing-Shen Chern, he is known as one of the "Three Heroes of Southwest Associated University". He was one of the first five mathematics academicians of Academia Sinica and a leader in the mathematics discipline of Peking University. He has trained a large number of outstanding talents in the fields of probability theory and statistics for China.

The lecture will explore the life story and scholarly contributions of Bao-Lu Hsu. He comes from a family, elegant and introverted, and is skilled in Kun opera performance. Professor Cai Tianxin once wrote Mr. Xu's long essay, which was later adapted into a picture book. He comes from Mr. Xu's hometown of Hangzhou and has visited Mr. Xu's mother's hometown of Xinjian in Jiangxi.

In 1919, Besicovitch constructed a compact set in the plane with Lebesgue measure 0 that contains a unit line segment pointing in every direction. Such objects are now called measure 0 Besicovitch sets (aka Kakeya sets). By replacing a measure zero Besicovitch set by its \delta-thickening, one obtains a collection of 1 x \delta rectangles pointing in different directions, the sum of whose areas is 1, but whose union has very small volume. The existence of such collections of rectangles is called the Besicovitch compression phenomenon.

The Kakeya set conjecture is a quantitative statement controlling the strength of the Besicovitch compression phenomenon. In this talk, I will discuss connections between the Besicovitch compression phenomenon, the Kakeya set conjecture, and questions in harmonic analysis and PDE.
