Specifically, this course aims to help the students:
This course is designed for intermediate students who are interested in the theoretical and systematic study of
world politics. The course first introduces students to several major theoretical approaches to the study of World
Politics (or International Relations), and then applies these approaches to a number of major, contemporary
issues—ranging from war and peace, conflict and cooperation, development and underdevelopment to global and
national interests—which have constantly drawn attention of national leaders and ordinary people in the world.
Specifically, this course has five objectives:
1. To demonstrate the importance of theory for describing, explaining, and predicting international political and
economic phenomena;
2. To familiarize students with the most influential and popular theoretical approaches (i.e. realism, pluralism or
liberalism, and globalism or Marxism) to the study of international relations, in terms of their intellectual
geneses, fundamental assumptions, major arguments, and applications;
3. To train students to think critically about global and regional issues rather than to provide them with easy
answers to these issues. Critical thinking involves:
Distinguishing among general theoretical approaches;
Assessing the merits of specific theoretical arguments;
Developing an independent approach to the issues of international relations.
4. To examine most salient issues in world politics systematically and critically, utilizing the various theoretical
approaches learned and developed in this class;
5. To familiarize students with the facts associated with major issues.
