教学目标 Course Objectives
The main objective of the course is to acquaint students with a variety of Buddhism’s roles in human history. The course
will first follow the chronological order of the development of Buddhism throughout Asia and later deal with its influence
on the contemporary world as well. The course pursues the interactive and participatory pedagogy and, in order to better
serve this purpose, every weekly meeting of the course will be comprised of two parts: topic-oriented lectures and
interactive Q&A sessions. For every week’s topic, students are expected to read required weekly readings before the
lecture and encouraged to prepare at least one question or comment regarding weekly subjects in the Q&A session.
During the course, we will watch two films about Buddhism’s roles in history and students are required to write one final
paper on one of them.

After successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
Have a broad range of knowledge about Buddhism’s roles in human history
Possess a better understanding of the interactions between human societies and one of world’s major religions
Learn how to do historical research and use relevant reference resources
