knowledge and build the ability of critical thinking. They can also establish the way of thinking in social sciences and

understand history, culture and society more deeply. This course is consist of four sections: section 1 will briefly

introduces a general approach to reading social science works; section 2 keeps focus on the foundational works of

sociology; keyword of the third one is "modernity"; and the fourth will focus on the "self-society" relationship. Different

sections are relatively independent but echo each other also. There are several reading-writing seminars interspersed

between the sections. Based on one semester reading training, students will be able to understand the main strands of

sociological thoughts in the twentieth century, and will be able to apply relevant theoretical readings to the analysis on

current social condition.
