教学目标 Course Objectives
This course gives an introduction to the archaeology and history of the ‘Silk Road’. It starts out by taking a look at
the ‘predecessors’ in the first millennium BCE and moves on to address selected case studies from the Han to the Tang
Dynasties. Our focus lies on material remains that illustrate the cultural diversity in the heydays of this famous network.
Scrutinizing the flow of goods, people and ideas, however, we will also discuss more general questions, such as how
cultural contacts influence (material) culture.
The historical Silk Road, however, cannot be thought without tracing its more recent history. We will thus also take a
critical look at the ‘rediscovery’ of the Silk Roads by early explorers, in the process also touching upon topics such as
heritage preservation and repatriation.
