With its diversity, its unique artistry and its rich and distinct regional culture,
Lingnan traditional arts and crafts stand out amidst the whole array of Chinese
traditional arts. From ivory carving, jade carving, olive Carving, plaster molding and
Shiwan pottery to Canton enamel, Canton embroidery, gambiered Canton gauze and Duan ink
stone, all are listed in the state-level intangible cultural heritage, renowned both
home and abroad. Other types of arts and crafts are known for their ingenious
craftsmanship and unique artistry that is one of a kind, such as glass etching, Lacquer
Art, palace lantern, bamboo carving, inlay, half etching, enamel, mother of pearl and
beyond. All of these are representations of Lingnan culture, characterized by intricate
artistry and the distinctness only found in Lingnan arts and crafts.
From the cultural perspective of Lingnan, this course is designed to analyze the
distinct cultural traits found in Lingnan arts and crafts. The lectures trace the
development of Lingnan culture, and by looking at their decorative forms, themes,
materials, workmanship, concepts and beyond, analyze the craftsmanship and artistic
features of the Lingnan arts and crafts. The cultural content of the works is also
discussed in the course, along with the contemporary development and inheritance of the
traditional arts and crafts culture. Through learning about the cultural origin,
artistic form, artistic style and aesthetic features, the students are expected to have
a better grasp on the major categories of traditional Lingnan arts and crafts, along
with their features, significance and values. The students are also expected to have a
better understanding of regional cultural traditions while they focus more on the
relationship between the study of art and cultural context as well as the important
elements of traditional art appreciation. Ultimately, all of these could contribute to

a better understanding of the spiritual meaning and historical value conveyed by the
artworks, and most importantly, a refiner character and taste.

通过习岭传统美术文化源、术形、工色以美学点,岭南统工
艺美的重别,解其点、和价,关术学与文景的系,握传艺美
术表与欣要素加强生对文化地域的认,理术作所传的人神和
历史价值,提高人文艺术素养。 
By studying the cultural origins, art forms, craft features and aesthetic
characteristics of Lingnan arts and crafts, the students are expected to know the
important categories, as well as the features, meanings and values of Lingnan arts and
crafts; concern the relationship between art learning and cultural circumstances; grasp
the elements for expression and appreciation of traditional arts and crafts; improve
their cognition on traditional culture and regional culture; understand the humanistic
spirit and historic value of art works; and improve their humanistic quality and
artistic accomplishments.
