Course introduction
ESE223.
ESE223. City and Environment (3)
Lecture, 3 credits, 3 hours per week. Pre-requisites: NA. Together with students in this
course, we will research on the various presentations of the most original natural
environmental elements in urban landscape and study the approaches of urban planning and
design that can largely respond to the environment. In this course, we will study some of the
main natural elements that are ubiquitous in urban landscape, such as topography, soil,
hydrology, climate, vegetation and habitat, etc.; and how these natural elements can be better
utilized and well protected in the process of spatial transformation in urban development, to
solve some problems closely related to urban planning, such as brownfield redevelopment,
landfill restoration, rainstorm management, sloping land utilization and wetland reconstruction.
