This course will introduce you to the development of industrial design over the past 200 years, with a
particular focus on the social, material, economic and cultural contexts of design innovation and
development. A significant part of the course is dedicated to the critical analysis of contemporary theories
and developments in design, enabling you to develop and present personal visions of the future of design.
Skills developed in this course include critical reading, literature research and basic theory application.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. recall and describe key historical and contemporary design theories and practices, and understand how they are linked
2. recall and describe major historical periods of design as well as their key formal, conceptual and contextual aspects
3. identify, analyze and present contemporary developments in design and their social and environmental implications
4. develop and present a speculative personal vision of the future of design

This is the first of a series of 4 lectures in which we will walk with large steps through design
