教学大纲及教学日历 SYLLABUS
“English for Innovators” is an English course for the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing. Some
design course assignments will be used as the basis for language development. Additionally, reading assignments in the
textbook will provide opportunities for discussion in class. These discussions will focus on the qualities of innovators
throughout history.
The course will be delivered in a hands-on approach, with students responsible for doing assignments outside of class in
order to participate in activities during class time. Time spent in class will be essential for learning, as students will be
expected to participate actively in language activities, including discussions, pronunciation, and skills for their design
course presentation. When they speak or interact, students will be expected to use English 90% of the time, or more.

Content Objectives. By the end of the course students will
Increase awareness of qualities of innovators
Identify those qualities within themselves, and to what degree they have them
Begin to develop those qualities
Become familiar with the stories of numerous innovators
Develop an appreciation of the importance of innovation and its role in success
Design, plan, and conduct a project or experiment to investigate or demonstrate innovation in the School of
System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing
Language Objectives. By the end of the course the students will
Reading
Develop stamina in reading English by reading 20-40 pages per week in an authentic English-language text
Increase the amount of known vocabulary, especially content specific words identified by the students as
necessary for their projects
Develop automaticity in vocabulary processing, increasing familiarity with previously studied words, thereby
moving them into the active vocabulary of the student
Speaking

Develop awareness of and control over spoken fluency, including hesitation noises, pauses, and fillers
Develop awareness of and greater control over pronunciation, including individual sounds, word stress, and rhythm
elements
Develop awareness of and control over spoken grammatical accuracy, including common errors for SUSTech
students
Increase spoken accuracy in pronunciation and grammar to a level approximating IELTS 7, or TOEFL iBT 90
(speaking section score 23)
Increase ability to participate in and lead small group discussions in English during classroom activities
Produce and analyze video or audio recordings of spoken performances of self and/or interactions with others
Produce multi-media presentations demonstrating spoken excellence on par with IELTS level 7, and/or TOEFL iBT

Record and track language progress in a language learning journal, including error identification and error-
reduction strategies

Appendix 1: Grades
Final Presentation
A presentation delivered in their design course at the end of the semester. This presentation
will be evaluated for language quality and general presentation skill quality.

Assignments
Progress Journal
This is a small A4 notebook. In the front, the student records their weekly
progress in language learning and/or their courses. In the back, the student keeps
an “error log” of significant or frequent language errors, and how to avoid them.

Presentation Skills Assignments
Through watching videos of others and creating and analyzing videos of their own
language use, students will gain increased awareness of and control over their
abilities. These will include presentation skills, as well as specific pronunciation

and grammar issues.
Discussion Worksheets
For every reading assignment, students will complete a worksheet to prepare
them for in-class discussions. This will include targeted vocabulary, phrases,
ideas, and communication strategies. After planning their language use, they will
use the worksheet in class. Activities will include time for reflection, during which
the worksheet will be reviewed.
