This course is a wide-ranging introduction to Chinese culture. Topics include (but are not limit to) Chinese Philosophy,
Religions, Literature, Arts, Education, Science, Technology, Sports, Folk Customs and Tourism. The main purpose of
the course is to acquire a basic knowledge of Chinese history, thought, religions, politics, economics, language,
literature, arts, people, society, and general ways of life. In addition to a widely used textbook (“A Glimpse of Chinese
Culture, Huaying Liao, 2015), a number of videos on aspects of Chinese history, literature, philosophy, fine arts, and
aspects of popular culture covering daily life, festivals, customs, costumes, cuisines, traditional medicine, martial arts,
folk art, historical sites are provided in class. Characterized by a sufficient use of power-point presentations and audio-
visual materials, the course has no prerequisites.
This course will serve as a bridge/window for students’ further exploration of China. Students are expected to apply what
they have learned to professional contexts as well as daily life situations. By involving with various Chinese culture
activities provided in class, students are expected to develop strong interest and passion for Chinese culture and wish to
explore more aspects of China in the future.
This is not a language skills course: you will not be tested on your ability to use Mandarin Chinese.
